Bindlestiff Studio seeks Artistic Director

BINDLESTIFF STUDIO:
Bindlestiff Studio is an affordable, professional, small performing arts venue in the heart of the South of Market/6th Street corridor. Since 1997, Bindlestiff Studio has served as the cultural epicenter for Pilipino and Filipino American arts in the Bay Area, occupying a vital place in the arts community by providing education, artistic development opportunities, performances, and a community-gathering place for Pilipino artists and audiences. We are dedicated to preserving and cultivating new works that explore Pilipino and Filipino American culture, to engaging and learning from recent immigrants, and to creating awareness of the rich tradition of Pilipino arts, as well as that of other diasporic cultures.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Artistic Director (AD) provides leadership in overseeing all areas and aspects of the artistic planning and program development, including performance scheduling, workshop development, artistic mentorship, community outreach, public relations, and long-range planning. The AD directly supervises the Program Coordinator, Publicity/Outreach Coordinator, and any other volunteer staff that assist with the artistic planning and program development at Bindlestiff. The AD will provide support to the Managing Director (MD) (or, until a MD is hired, the Board appointed staff) with regards to the Theater’s venue management and grant development. The AD will also be called upon to assist with the ongoing New Theater Capital Campaign, which is expected to run until the completion of the new 6th Street facility at the beginning of 2006.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Curating monthly/yearly calendar of events. These events may be structured around stock productions, such as PiNoisePop, KitaMo Film Festival, Stories High, The Queue, etc.
  • Developing and scheduling ongoing workshops and classes as part of the yearly program. This would include existing workshops like the Stories High Theatrical Workshop, and The Queue Filmmaking Workshop.
  • Identifying and developing programming paths via workshops, collaborations, and community outreach to cultivate the artistic needs of the Theater’s constituency.
  • Coordinating publicity (i.e., press releases) via email, Web, publications, and other media with PTL for all performances, productions, and workshops.
  • Representing the Theater professionally and responsibly at community events, organizational meetings, and public functions.
  • Supervising and facilitating the training volunteer staff.
  • Attending Board Meetings to provide updates on programming.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA Degree
  • Minimum 4 years of experience with arts organization(s)
  • Minimum 2 years experience supervising staff or managing arts related projects
  • Exemplary interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Strong verbal and communication skills, including public speaking, presentation, and writing.
  • Strong background in the performing arts, as well as a deep and diverse understanding/appreciation of multiple artistic disciplines and genres (as well as the unique creation/distribution processes for each of them).
  • Proven ability to work amongst multiple, diverse cultures.
  • A person of integrity, high energy, creativity, and good humor who respects and encourages those qualities in others.
  • A good knowledge of Bindlestiff Studio, its constituency, the community that surrounds it, and the history under which it has developed.

TERMS OF POSITION:
Part Time (20 hrs/wk), 9 month guaranteed commitment, $10-14,000 (DOE). Great growth opportunity with potential for Full Time commitment by September of 2005.
