Ma-Yi
Theatre
New York City
I just got word about this theatre group, which did a production
of Pinoy Tok (Women Talk) by Chris Millado, at New WORLD Theater
in Amherst.
Artistic Director: Ralph B. Pena
Executive Director: Jorge Z. Ortoll
Mission: To produce new plays and performance works that
essay stories from the Filipino-American diaspora.
History: Founded in 1989, Ma-Yi is the premiere Filipino-American
theatre company in the United States, and the only one of its kind in the
Northeast. Ma-Yi Theatre has produced original works by Filipino-American
writers such as Chris Millado, Louella Dizon, Linda Faigao-Hall, Jessica
Hagedorn, Nicky Paraiso, Han Ong (Swoony Planet) and Ralph Pena.
It's recent production of Ralph Pena's Flipzoids received the prestigious
Obie Award.
Ma-Yi celebrates its Ninth Season with a staging of Portrait
of An Artist As Filipino at the Vineyard Theatre this summer. Plans
are being developed to stage a musical adaptation of Carlos Bulosan's America
is In the Heart. Support comes from the National Endowment For The Arts,
The New York State Council On The Arts, The Nancy Quinn Fund, The Northstar
Fund, IBM Corporation and from individuals.
