The First National Asian American Theatre Festival

Guidelines

The first National Asian American Theatre Festival will be held in New York City from June 11 – 24, 2007.  Over these two weeks, the Festival will present Asian American theatres and individual performers in venues in Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island showcasing and celebrating a vast array of artists to demonstrate the vitally important contributions we make to contemporary American culture.  The Festival will continue the momentum generated by the first Asian American Theatre Conference of June 2006, demonstrating the existence of an Asian American theatre movement in this country and infusing it with exuberance and energy.

For this first ever Festival, we will be concentrating on presenting theatre and performance art.  While we acknowledge the equally important and rich dance and music works Asian American artists offer, it would be beyond our capacity to include those disciplines at this time.

We are seeking to represent diversity in demographics, styles, and subject matter.  We would like to present long-established companies and artists as well as recent and emergent ones.  We would like as wide as possible a representation regionally.

Proposed programming:

  • Full productions of work by theatre companies
  • Showcases of individual artists including solo performers and ensemble pieces
  • Open mic events.  Proposals to curate an event will be accepted.

We would like to be as inclusive as possible given our resources, and will use the following guidelines to help us in our decisions:

Companies:

  • In existence for at least three years, having presented once a year for the last two years.
  • Artistic leadership for the past three years.
  • Projects that the Festival will be able to support technically and logistically.  The time for load-in and tech will be 8 hours; Turn around time will be overnight.

Individual Artists:

Performance record for the past two years.
