New WORLD Theater

Strictly speaking, New WORLD Theater isn't an Asian American theatre, either...it's just was founded by an Asian American (Roberta Uno), has a lot of Asian Americans on staff and does a lot of work by Asian American artists.

Basically, New WORLD is a multicultural theatre, which does a lot of work by Asian American artists. Projects they are working on include

  • a commissioned piece with Lane Nishikawa on youth and violence, called The Heartbeat of America;
  • A new play by Vietnamese Ameican writer Thuy Le;
  • A collaborative play development project with the Southeast Asian community (national artists Shishir Kurup, Hung Nguyen, Page Leong, Don-Il Lee and Ping Chong are working on the planning for this project, which is one of five national sites of the American Festival Project).

Founding Artistic Director Roberta Uno is also a co-editor of Unbroken Thread, an absolutely wonderful anthology of plays written by Asian American women (an absolute must for the Asian American theatre library). See the Library for more details.
