Somewhat different from all the other Asian American theatres, Theater of the Yugen is specifically devoted to producing an American version of the Japanese Noh theater. It produces some of the most interesting shows in American theatre, including 1996's Down the Dark Well, a gripping exploration of the spiritual repercussions of medical definitions of death. [in Japan, as the program notes for the Yugen production explain, there have been no heart transplants since charges of murder were leveled at the surgeon who performed the first one in 1968].
