Asian American Plays From New York

The Asian American Writers' Workshop is currently accepting plays and performance pieces by Asian Americans in New York for an anthology to be released in the Fall of 1998. This anthology will document a new direction and spirit in Asian American cultural production. Their range in subject matter, style structure, and language underscores the recognition that the Asian American experience can no longer be viewed as a monolith, but must be understood for its variety, its multiple permutations, and contradictions. These plays will explore new ideas as well as issues of historic resonance, new dramatic forms as well as traditional realism. They will challenge the externally and internally imposed boundaries placed on Asian American cultural expression. Submissions should focus on one of the themes listed below:

• Asian American male experience
• Asian American female experience
• Asian American identity, including stereotypes and myths
• Asian American family

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION:

Previously published or produced works are welcome, but preference will be given to work that has not yet been anthologized. Only original one acts or full-length plays will be considered. No translations or adaptations.

AII manuscripts must be typed and bound. Loose pages held together by a rubber band or binder clip will not be considered! All pages must be numbered and character names spelled out (no abbreviations, please). The manuscript must have a title page, including manuscript title, your name address, and phone number. Also include your fax number and e-mail address if applicable.

On front of the envelope, assign one of the thematic areas of concentration listed above.

Only one submission per author.

If you would like, please include a self-addressed, stamped postcard or envelope for response.
