Asian American Theater Company, in association with the Mark Taper Forum's Asian Theater Workshop, presents the Northern California premiere of I Remember Mapa, the hilarious solo show written and performed by nationally renowned Filipino American actor and comedian Alec Mapa. From smoky cabarets to Broadway theaters to television sound stages, San Francisco native Mapa chronicles his hilarious true life experiences in the mainstream entertainment industry in I Remember Mapa, directed by Chay Yew, playwright and director of the Mark Taper Forum's Asian Theater Workshop in Los Angeles. This one-person show recounts an outsider's experiences in a decidedly insider's industry. I Remember Mapa premiered in a double bill at the Mark Taper Forum's "Two at the Too" in March 1997. The show recently completed a run at Los Angeles' Asian Pacific Islander American theater company East West Players to packed houses and enthusiastic reviews. Mapa is best known for playing the role of "Song Liling" in both the Broadway production and national touring companies of David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly. Also, he recently performed in a new work about the press and the presidency by Anna Deavere Smith last fall at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. Other Broadway credits include Timon of Athens and A Little Hotel on the Side, both with the National Actor's Theatre. Mapa has appeared off-Broadway in the New York Shakespeare Festival production of Chay Yew's A Language of Their Own. Film credits include Bright Lights, Big City, A New Life and The Substance of Fire. Television credits include TheYoung Indiana Jones Chronicles, Melrose Place, Hart to Hart, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, The Jamie Foxx Show, Roseanne, Law & Order, Seinfeld and, most recently, recurring roles on three ABC series, Spy Game, Murder One and NYPD Blue (where Alec appears as the loveable transvestite prostitute "Angela"). Mapa's last stage appearances were in Porcelain and Half Lives, part of the East West Players production of Chay Yew's "Whitelands" trilogy, for which he received the 1996 L.A. Ovation Award and Dramalogue Award for best actor. The show begins Asian American Theater Company's 25th Anniversary Year, which continues with a revival of the first play produced by the original Asian American Theater Workshop, Frank Chin's The Chickencoop Chinaman, and the Tsunami Performance Series during Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month.
