JUDITH NIHEI, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE NORTHWEST ASIAN AMERICAN THEATRE, TO RETURN TO SAN FRANCISCO

The Northwest Asian American Theatre (NWAAT) announces that Artistic Director Judith Nihei is resigning her position as of August 31, 1997, to return to San Francisco for personal reasons. "It's been a challenging and exciting four years," says Nihei, "and I'm extremely proud of my staff, all our artists and our community for what we've been able to accomplish." Nihei, a founding member of the 24-year-old company, was hired as the company's first full-time artistic director in July 1993.

Katie Kiyonaga, NWAAT Board President says, "Judi's work has really helped bring the theatre to a more professional level. Since she's been here, we've been able to raise both the quality of work and the visibility of the Theatre, locally, nationally and internationally." Under Nihei's leadership, NWAAT developed many new projects - most notably the International Artists Collaboration, a three-year project funded by The Ford Foundation - and relationships. In the past four years, NWAAT has worked closely with many of the major theatres in Seattle, including ACT, Bainbridge Performing Arts, Seattle Children's Theatre, The Group and The Seattle Rep. Nihei is also a founding board member of Seattle's new theatre networking and support organization, Theatre Puget Sound.

NWAAT is currently accepting resumes of those interested in the artistic directior's position. Resumes and letters of interest may be addressed to: Board of Directors, Northwest Asian American Theatre, 409 7th Avenue South, Seattle, Washington, 98104.
