Singapore Repertory Theatre, the world's only international, Pan-Asian theatre company, launches a world-wide search for plays exploring the modern Asian identity. Is it unique? Are "Asian values" opposed to Western? Do they even exist? SRT invites playwrights to deal with such questions dramatically in a full-length, English-language play suitable for newly developing international audiences. A prize of US $ 15,000 will be awarded to the winner, as well as a full-scale production at SRT in 1998. Playwrights David Henry Hwang, Philip Kan Gotanda, and Singapore's own Woon Ping Chin make up the distinguished panel of judges that will select a winner.

The competition launches SRT's new Asian Initiative, an attempt by the company to foster the development of new work and capitalise on Singapore's position as a cultural gateway between East and West. No current competition or prize for new plays matches the scope of this venture. The project will provide a Pan-Asian base of new plays and playwrights for future SRT seasons, and cultivate a top-notch repertory of plays by and about Asians. With this unprecedented campaign, SRT exhibits its strong commitment to boosting international exposure of and opportunities for Asian theatre artists.
