AAs at Obies

Yow! Asian American theatre artists certainly turned some heads, carting off three awards at this year's Obie Awards, given May 19, for excellence for Off Broadway (Obie!) theatre productions.

Leading the way was David Henry Hwang for his work in writing Golden Child, which will eventually make it to Broadway in 1988 (see story further on own). Also honored was Tsai Chin (Joy Luck Club, Woman Warrior), for her performance in Golden Child as one of the three wives and mother of the title character.

But most interesting (and gratifying) was the acting Obie given to Ching Valdes-Aran, for her work in Ma-Yi Theatre's Flipzoids. While not as well known as many other Asian American artists, Valdes-Aran has a long list of credits, ranging from Spenser For Hire to Vietnam War Story to Disney's upcoming animated movie, Legend of Mulan. Not impressed? Consider some of the others who won acting Obies: Andre Braugher, David Morse, Mary Louise Parker. Yowza...pretty fast company...but well deserved.
