East West Players presents Carry the Tiger to the Mountain

East West Players, the nation' s first and foremost Asian American theatre, sets the cast and designers for the second production of its 33rd Anniversary Season, the West Coast premiere of CARRY THE TIGER TO THE MOUNTAIN, written by Cherylene Lee. The East West Players David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center for the Arts is located at 120 North Judge John Aiso Street (formerly San Pedro Street) in Little Tokyo downtown Los Angeles. CARRY THE TIGER TO THE MOUNTAIN will open on February 24 and close on March 14, 1999. Low priced previews begin on Thursday, February 18, 1999.

Directed by Tim Dang, CARRY THE TIGER TO THE MOUNTAIN is an epic dramatization of the true life story of Lily Chin, a postwar picture bride who became a civil rights activist following the beating death of her son, Vincent Chin, at the hands of two Detroit auto workers in 1982.

The cast for CARRY THE TIGER TO THE MOUNTAIN includes (in alphabetical order) Kandace Cline, Richard Gallegos, Robert Greenberg, Steve Humphreys, Reggie Lee, Cindy Lu, Benjamin Lum, Matt K. Miller, Kim Montelibano, Beulah Quo, and Barry Sigismondi.

Tai chi choreography for CARRY THE TIGER TO THE MOUNTAIN is by Peter Kwong, set design by Esther Urasaga Jr., costume design by Dori Quan, lighting design by Jose Lopez, and sound and slide design by Miles Ono. Ricardo Figueroa is the production stage manager.

Cherylene Lee has written such works as WONG BOW RIDES AGAIN and ARTHUR AND LEILA which have been produced at East West Players and various theatres around the country. CARRY THE TIGER TO THE MOUNTAIN, originally commissioned and produced by Contemporary Theater Festival, West Virginia, is sponsored in part by a grant from the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.

Performances are Thursday through Saturday evenings at 8pm (except Thursday, March 4, showtime is 7pm), and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm. There is no Saturday matinee performance on February 27. Low priced previews are February 18, 19 and 20 at 8pm and February 21 at 2pm. General ticket prices range from $25-$27 for orchestra and $20-$22 for balcony. Patrons can purchase tickets beginning February 1 by calling Telecharge at 800-233-3123, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Senior and student rates are available.
