South Asian Youth Action Presents: A Benefit Performance featuring SAYA! Youth and Peeling the Banana

The Manhattan premiere of the collaboration between NYC's only South Asian youth agency and Peeling the Banana, NYC's one-of-a-kind pan-Asian American theater troupe, will reveal it all to you Off-Broadway at The Joseph Papp Public Theatre on Tuesday June 23rd. All proceeds will benefit SAYA's youth center in Elmhurst, Queens.

PEELING THE BANANA is an Asian American arts collective based in NYC that utilizes autobiography as a depature point for performance, community building and political expression. The New York Times has compared Peeling the Bananaís productions to Ntozake Shange's choreopoem "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf". Shelby Jiggets, the director of play development for The Public Theater told Newsday that, "I was moved just by being in a room with them". She added that the work touches on issues that affect people regardless of race: issues like relationships beween fathers and sons or between men and women. Peeling the Banana has performed at The Joseph Papp Public Theatre, Second Stage Theatre, New York Film Academy, Los Angeles Highways Performance Space, and has toured over a dozen U.S. cities.
