EAST WEST PLAYERS HONORS GEORGE TAKEI WITH A BENEFIT PERFORMANCE OF COMEDY AND MUSIC ON NOVEMBER 14,1998

East West Players, the nation's first and foremost Asian American theatre company, presents HERO, A Tribute to George Takei a star-studded evening of comedy and music honoring George Takei from Star Trek fame. Benefiting East West Players programs and operations, HERO will be held on Saturday, November 14, 1998, beginning at 8:00 pm at East West Players David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center for the Arts, 120 Judge John Aiso Street (formerly San Pedro Street) between First and Temple Streets. Tickets are $100 for performance and the post-party. VIP tickets are $175, which include a private, pre-performance reception with George Takei at 6:30 pm. The honorary chairs of this benefit are Bruce T. Kaji, Founding President and Board of Trustees member of the Japanese American National Museum, and Wayne Lee, Chairman of Golden Security Bank.

George Takei best known for his portrayal of Mr. Sulu in the acclaimed television series Star Trek, has twenty-seven feature films and hundreds of television guest starring roles to his credit. Outside the entertainment arena, Mr. Takei is a community activist. He served for more than a decade on the board of directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District and was the past president of an association that oversees El Pueblo Historic Park, birthplace of Los Angeles.

Mr. Takei also served as the co-chairperson of the New Theater Campaign Committee for East West Players, successfully moving EWP to its new home at the Union Center for the Arts in Little Tokyo.

Confirmed guest performers include Garrett Wong (Voyager), Jennifer Paz (MISS SAIGON), Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek), Pat Morita (The Karate Kid, Happy Days), and Walter Koenig (Star Trek).
