Language of their Own, by Chay Yew
Asian American Theater Company
1/96

"Low-key, small-scale and unremittingly intimate, Chay Yew's A Language of Their Own works its way into your consciousness by tiny increments. No one sings. But Language is almost more of a song cycle than a play. Yew builds his bittersweet reverie on love among gay Asian American men with spoken duets and solo arias, often with musically repeated refrains.

"It doesn't always work, or perhaps director Tim Dang hasn't found the right temp for every movement...But the poetic intensity of Yew's language builds almost imperceptibly to its own rueful, hopeful playoff."

Robert Hurwitt, SF Examiner
